Meet my new friend Herve Gracia Argant. His story is fairly typical of many of the children here at the Diakonos orphanage. Meeting him today, he is a very happy child, with a strong sense of humour. His manners are impeccable (offering me his chair and a model English student), and we share a love of football.
Herve was a 12 year old street kid with no parents, living in a rough slum area of Port au Prince. His only procession was a pair of filthy, old, ill-fitting trousers, and was painfully thin.
Herve before arriving at Diakonos
Herve was taken in by Diakonos in August 2009. In the first month of his arrival he was given his first pair of shoes and by October he was enrolled in school for the first time, and provided with books, a school bag and even a smart full school uniform.
a happy and smart boy indeed
His story is shared with me by Jean-Luc Petit-Frere, the young, hard-working and dedicated project director. He shows me a picture of Herve when he first arrived at the orphanage. The transformation even within the first month is simply amazing. He is one of just so many in what Martine describes as “living in the shadows of extreme misery and oppression in Haiti”.
a proud owner of his first pair of shoes - aged 12
If you are reading this page i´d bet my bottom dollar that you are far more fortunate than Herve and these children here in the orphanage. Please give as generously possible to this incredibly worthy cause by clicking here.
