I found out about the existence of Diakonos through Martine at the International airport. Martine in a Haitian living in New York and we have been in frequent contact. I think she was a bit taken aback by my reporting of my experiences and first impressions from Port au Prince. She sends me this charming email.
Wish you could have visited Haiti back when I was growing up and up until 1986. The country was beeaaauutiful. We used to be called the "Pearl of the Antilles" that's how beautiful it was. Kids used to play in the streets in the afternoon. We had lights 24 hours a day and running water. Things have deteriorated drastically. Even the caliber of people is not the same. This is a totally different country from what is used to be. Some say we went backwards by leaps and bounds, others say we didn't go back because if we had we would have electricity 24/7 and running water, with not garbage in the streets.
Hope we can turn things around for the better this time without having to count on the government to do it. We should each individually assume responsibility to build the country to a new and improved Haiti.
Hope you won't get discouraged and can lay a hand. Especially with the children. They are our only hope.
Martine is back in Haiti on the 11th April so we will have a chance to catch up in person again.
