Real Men Eat Quiche

After my bout of suspected giardia, I have been careful with my diet. Fortunately McLeod Ganj has several excellent restaurants with a varied menu. Even quiche can be found in the Indian Himalayan foothills!

I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with pastry fingers and I will always be indebted to Emily B. for teaching me how to make top class quiches. However without an oven here, I decided to check out and compare the quiches served up around the village.

First up was Llamo´s Croissant - advertised above the door as “Traditional French with an Amdo Twist” Now who can resist that? It served up an excellent effort in their spinach quiche, with crisp quality pastry. Now Rp40 is a reasonable price, but the portion was disappointingly small. They also serve up a variety of cakes for about Rs40 and a double espresso will set you back Rs45. The lemon tart is recommended. It boasts a small but pleasant roof-top terrace. Popular Tibetan massages are also available on the second floor, and daily documentaries are screened at 6.30pm daily.

Next up was The Chocolate Log. This is a Swiss owned venture offering cakes, quality chocolate balls with an attached wine cellar selling predominantly Indian wines. Their spinach and cheese quiche filling was full of flavour, but unfortunately the pastry tasted distinctly bread-like. They also offer the most unusual accommodation in Cheryton cottages in a pinkish octagonal building next door.

Finally it was over to Nick´s Italian Kitchen on the Bhagsu Road. At Rp50 their spinach quiche was the most expensive of the three samples, however they also boast the largest portion and overall the best quality quiches in town. Lonely Planet describe their brownies in chocolate sauce as “heavenly”.

JJ´s Italian Brothers in Exile restaurant (also on the Bhagsu Road) boasts quiche on the menu, but both times I visited, it was “not available.”
