No doubt about it, i arrive into Egypt during historic times.
It’s the height of the tourist season, but Aswan remains almost completely devoid of travellers. Almost all those that are here are over-landers with no other options available. I must say it makes the place much more peaceful and beautiful.
There have been just a handful of demonstrators on the street, but the amount of misinformation going around is immense. Going around the market last night we are told Mubarak would definitely step down at 8pm local time, but tuning into the World Service last night it is clear he has no intention of leaving office at this moment in time.
As i walk through the streets, the locals probably pray that i am just one of the first swallows to make their summer. Probably not.
Feelings amongst the locals seem very mixed, with many elderly Egyptians proclaiming the young protestors deluded, for Mobarak has brought both peace and prosperity tothe country for the last 30 years. More concern seems to surround Mobarak's son taking over and a dynasty being created.
Whilst the protests continue and therefore no tourists around, i’m a very contented traveller.
only a small pocketful of protestors on the streets of Aswan yesterday
Editor's Addition: As news breaks of Mubarak standing down just after 7pm tonight, Aswan erupts!
