sunset over Lake Manyara
Some 30kms east of Ngorogoro lies Lake Manyara National Park. It is home to the famous if almost impossible to spot tree-climbing lions, leopards, elephants, giraffe, hippos, zebra, wildebeest and a plethora of bird-life, including pelican, flamingo, hornbills and stork.

Stretching for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600-metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem, with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest i had seen in Africa”.
According to their official website "the compact game-viewing circuit through Manyara offers a virtual microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience."

The gates officially open at 7am and payment can only be made by credit card. However the office gate has a problem with their credit card machine and we have to wait an hour to finally be allowed in.
cute monkeys perform agile acrobatics at the park entrance
wildebeest running along the lakeside
It is good and rich in wildlife, but after the magic of Ngorogoro, it can appear to be somewhat dull unless you are a keen ornithologist.
