Wadi Halfa

The owner of El Fucker arranges quality transport from Abri to Wadi Halfa, although it is a little more expensive at SP30 for the two and a half hour journey.

Both the Bradt Guide and Lonely Planet – Africa write fairly damning statements about the beautifully and romantically named Wadi Halfa – described as a “waiting room” for this is the port for onward travel into Egypt.

This seems to be somewhat an injustice as both Milan and myself find it an attractive and interesting port town. The shops are well stocked with plenty of Egyptian imports.

Staying in the new Kilopatra Tourist Hotel opposite the ferry ticket office, it is the cleanest and best quality hotel i have found in Sudan, with beds going for SP15.

A favourite restaurant is Albahabrin which sells meat, fish and vegetarian dishes at reasonable prices.

I reconfirm my ticket at the ferry ticket office (bought in Khartoum), and relieved i do not have to purchase a meal ticket which is now included in the price. 1st class/2nd class tickets are sold for SP153/SP95. The Immigration Office where Sudanese exit cards are available just behind this ticket office opens at 8am.

Any problems and you can try and get in contact with Mazar Mahir - a fixer for Euan McGregor on his overland Africa trip in 2007. He can be contacted by his mobile +249 - 1223 80 740 or email mashansharti@yahoo.com
