Departing Nampula, there is a train running to Cuamba. Trains depart daily (except possibly Sunday( at 5am but only run 2nd and 3rd class tickets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I have been warned that 3rd class only is often pretty rough.
I am told the train departs at 4am but it doesn't pull out of Nampula till 5am. Better to be too early than too late.

The trip takes just over 10 hours and makes a delightful treat after the lousy chapas journeys. Every station is like a market stall, selling a variety of locally produced onions, casava, carrots, garlic, peppers, maize, etc. Each station seems to have their own speciality produce.
A second class ticket cost Mtc331.
