Lonely Planet’s Africa describes Karonga as a “relaxed little town” – well they clearly didn’t come in via the bus stand which is complete mayhem. It’s a border town from where i will be heading into Mbeya, Tanzania before travelling to Dar Es Salaam and onwards on a large loop round towards Rwanda.Some 90kms and two hours north from Chitimba, Karonga is the last stop for the Ilala ferry on Lake Malawi and seems an appropriate departure point for me from Malawi. It is nice round the lakeshore, some ambling cattle on the streets and a bustling if somewhat crowded and claustrophobic market. It is also the home to the National History museum which has dinosaur skeletons.
